Canister Filters for Saltwater Aquariums are a huge benefit for filtering saltwater aquarium water. Canister filters on saltwater aquariums are quiet and require much less maintenance than sumps.
Contrary to popular belief, canister filters are not nitrate factories, any more than a saltwater aquarium sumps or sump socks would be.

The debris removed from the aquarium water column includes fish waste, uneaten food and any other solid that will contaminate the water in your saltwater aquarium.
The next filtering stage in the canister filter involves chemical filtration, where various media, such as activated carbon or purigen, adsorbs impurities and toxins from the water in your saltwater aquarium.
Finally, in the last stage, biological filtration can take place. Fostering the growth of beneficial bacteria that break down ammonia and nitrites, are essential for maintaining a stable and healthy aquatic environment.
Some reef keepers such as myself, never use biological filtration in the canister filter. It’s always best to use live rock and sand in your saltwater aquarium for beneficial bacteria.
Instead of using ceramic rings or other items in your canister filter for beneficial bacteria to live on, use this last chamber in the canister filter for more mechanical filtering media (foam.)
Installation and Placement:
Setting up a canister filter for a saltwater aquarium involves a few key steps. First, position the canister filter below the aquarium, preferably in a cabinet or designated filtration area.
The canister filter is connected to the aquarium via hoses, with an intake tube placed inside the aquarium to draw water into the canister filter via the canister filter’s motor. The filtered water is then returned to the tank through an outflow tube via the same silent motor.

I drain my canister filters only once every 2-3 months and replace all foam filter media. This entire process is not only fast (15 minutes), but also very inexpensive. Each of my Fluval FX6 canister filters hold about 7 gallons of water. When the process is complete, I replace this saltwater with new saltwater that I make at home.

Sump filtration for saltwater aquariums, as opposed to canister filter filtration in a saltwater aquarium, is not only louder, and brings salt creep, but will cause nitrates to rise, more than a canister filter ever would.
How often do saltwater aquarium keepers drain and remove the sump from under their saltwater aquarium to completely clean out all uneaten food and fish waste from the sump? Not often. Aquarium sumps become the nitrate factories, with uneaten fish food and fish waste collecting on the bottom of your saltwater aquarium sump.
Saltwater aquarium sumps for aquarium filtration also use filter socks to catch uneaten fish food and fish waste. Many saltwater aquarium keepers will not clean or replace these filter socks (should be done every few days since filter socks are much smaller than canister filters.)

The cost of canister filters may seem expensive, but their price is so much less than purchasing a saltwater aquarium sump and return pumps to pump the saltwater back into your aquarium from the sump. Canister filters are not only easier and faster to clean, but much less expensive.
